Building a Sustainable Future: Sports Facilities Made from Bamboo

2024.06.26

As awareness of sustainable development grows, bamboo is emerging as an attractive alternative to traditional construction materials. This innovative material is making significant inroads in the construction of sports facilities, showcasing how sustainable practices can shape a greener future.

Bamboo stands out as an eco-friendly substitute for wood, concrete, and steel. Its application in sports facility construction markedly reduces environmental impact and enhances sustainability. The use of locally sourced bamboo in certain regions further decreases carbon emissions associated with transportation. The advantages of bamboo extend beyond its environmental benefits. This material is not only strong and durable but also lightweight and flexible, making it ideal for modern construction demands.

From Stadiums to Yoga Studios, the cases below showcase how the use of bamboo helps reduce environmental impact and promote long-term sustainability.

- Kura Kura Badminton Courts / IBUKU + Studio Jencquel

The initial concept to build Kura Kura started with Studio Jencquel as part of a larger real estate endeavor that they had developed (Rumah Hujan Estate). The studio had some spare land that was close to the street, and unused for “rooms”. They saw the opportunity to build something that would also create a barrier or buffer between the street and the guest living areas of the property.

- Bamboo Sports Hall for Panyaden International School / Chiangmai Life Construction

Chiangmai Life Architect’s Bamboo Sports Hall for Panyaden International School combines modern organic design, 21st-century engineering, and a natural material – bamboo. The brief was to build a hall that should be big enough to hold the projected capacity of 300 students, but still smoothly integrates with the previous earthen and bamboo buildings of the school as well as the natural hilly landscape of the area. It should provide modern sports facilities and use the only bamboo to maintain the low carbon footprint and the “Green School” mission of Panyaden.

- Yoga & Spa Ubud / Pablo Luna Studio

The Yoga & Spa is a space designed for a family as their sacred space, celebrating the interplay between physical, mental and spiritual practices. Inspired by the fluid movements of the surrounding flora and the practice of yoga, the architecture features expressive bamboo arched frames that gracefully embrace the captivating views.
This two-story building occupies 196 m2, with a circle-shaped first floor surrounded by polished concrete walls, adorned with arched metal profile windows, and bamboo details.

- Changqi Stadium Bamboo Corridor / Atelier cnS

Changqi Stadium Bamboo Corridor is situated in Changqi Ancient Village, Lubao, Foshan, Guangdong Province. Lubao Town has a rich tradition of bamboo weaving, with local craftsmen creating bamboo household items. The village is surrounded by a bamboo forest filled with Moso bamboo. Leveraging this local resource and traditional bamboo weaving techniques, a court facility was constructed to revitalize an old basketball court. This initiative not only showcases bamboo and bamboo weaving but also breathes new life into the ancient village.
