The rehabilitation and enlargement of the house Quinta de São Tiago, in the Parish Union of Antas and Abade Vermoim, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, is the winner of the third edition of the Januário Godinho Award, promoted by the city hall in order to promote the safeguard and valorisation of the built heritage.
The architectural project of the work was the responsibility of the NOARQ, NO Arquitetos Lda. office, having as author the architect José Carlos Nunes Oliveira. The promotion of the work was the responsibility of the company MT & Costa Sociedade Imobiliária, Lda. and the construction was the responsibility of the company Henrique Cunha, Lda.
With a value of 7 thousand euros, the prize is divided in 2 thousand euros for the promoter and 5 thousand euros for the project team.
The Prize, which will be delivered on November 21st, in a ceremony to be held at the City Hall of Famalicão, was unanimously awarded. The jury of the initiative speaks of a "meritorious and well achieved" work. According to the final act of the award, "the rehabilitation fell upon a building that had been previously intervened, with practices that adulterated it", and the solution adopted "tried to correct those aspects, improve it and recreate a coherence of the new spaces with the pre-existence (...) with the introduction of new elements and volumes that value the whole set, creating unity".
Composed by two floors, the building presents a traditional matrix, with the characteristics of the region. Built in granite blocks and covered in ceramic tiles, the walled house with the adjacent street has a granite-faced elevation with doorways, windows on the upper floor and a small tiled panel with the inscription "Quinta de São Tiago". The access is made through a shed, from which there is access to an exterior space that distributes to the several accesses to the interior of the house and to the garden and leisure area.
Inside, the spaces follow one another in a visual continuum in which the materiality of the pre-existence is exposed in the common parts and maintained throughout the building envelope. The two extensions, to the east and west, adopt different languages, using materials such as stone and wood, and the volumes are based on the gable roof.
It is recalled that the Januário Godinho Award was created in 2017 with the aim of promoting the safeguarding and enhancement of built heritage, as well as promoting the dissemination of the work developed by designers, builders and developers. The award is held every two years, and this third edition refers to works completed in 2019 and 2020.
The rehabilitation of the Old Church Palace, in Vermoim, was the winning work of the first edition of the award. The architectural project was the responsibility of the VISIOARQ architecture office, with the architects Vicente Gouveia, Nuno Poiarez and Pedro Afonso as co-authors. The promotion of the work was the responsibility of the company Vetor Predileto Unipessoal. The rehabilitation of the "Casa Serafim e Esperança Oliveira", in the centre of Vila Nova de Famalicão, won the second edition of the initiative. The architectural project was the responsibility of Atelier 15 Arquitetura, Lda. The co-authors of the project were the architects Sérgio Fernandez and Alexandre Alves Costa. The work was executed by Construções Silvério & Filho and promoted by Vítor Serafim Pereira Oliveira.
Januário Godinho, an important figure in modern Portuguese architecture, was born on 16 August 1910 in the municipality of Ovar. An eminently modern architect, he stands out from his peers due to the importance he gave to tradition, context and built heritage in all his work. The vast work that Januário Godinho left in our territory and his sensitivity to the balance between new and tradition are teachings that deserve to be disseminated and honoured through this Award.
From the work left in Vila Nova de Famalicão by Januário Godinho we can highlight the Paços do Concelho building and the old Court House; in the parish of Antas the building for the Banco Português do Atlântico (1953); in the parish of Brufe the Afonso Barbosa house (1940-42); in the parish of Louro several constructions in the Quinta de Seara, property of the banker Artur Cupertino de Miranda, the market, the church, the Casa do Povo, the parish centre and the cemetery. In the parish of Requião, whose promoter was the industrialist Manuel Gonçalves, the Casa Manuel Gonçalves, the Quinta de Compostela and Têxteis Manuel Gonçalves stand out.
